World Social Forum - 2004

The World Social Forum, 2004 in mumbai was a very sensitizing event। Their are many questions hitherto unresolved। Too many issues were discussed and very few solutions emerged। However, it would be our fallacy if we do not recognise the valure fo such a vast forum inorder to provide with a 'Alternative World'. Please see the attchment to read more about the event.... [http://www.holycrossjustice.org/pdf/Integral%20Liberation/June2004/Reflection%20on%202004%20WSF%20&%20Future%20of%20the%20WSF...pages%20145-155.pdf] see the man in the picture symbolizing the pain that poor face under the programmes of international institutions...please do post your comments as to how do react to this metaphoric expression towards undemocratic and autocratic polices of the interantional policies??

i don't want to sound like a communist, but certain MNCs are to blame for the current social inequality. The latest misadventure being the huge MNCs like ITC getting into Agarbatti business! This is one of the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard! Openly snatching away livelihood of all the cottage industries making incense sticks! Its an extortion of a different kind. I don't understand what compulsions drove a huge company like ITC to devastate millions' livelihood. Neither do I understand what threat these guys faced from the cottage industries. This is inhuman and a best example of how rich get richer and poor get poorer! Its a very unfortunate situation.

even i dont want to come across like a communist...how ever i share my concern with you. This 'divide' is something which is instituted by the international instituions through their polices ...you see these instituions dont realize the reality in countris like ours..int'l insitutionl programmes are not compatible to conditions in third world countries ..we need to develop an alterative model to reap the benefits of any development...i thiink these ..intstituions should come out their global hanghover...only the wearer of a shoe knows the real pain of the shoe bite....

SO WHAT ALTERNATIVE DO YOU SUGGEST? AGREE THAT DEVELOPING COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA NEED TO CHART THEIR OWN COURSE, HOWEVER THE ALTERNATIVES SUGGESTED CAN VERY WELL FALL INTO THE SAME PERILOUS TRAP WHICH SHROUDS THE NEOLIBERAL MODEL. SIMPLY PUT, THE STATE FALTERED ON ACCOUNT OF ITS EXCESSIVENESS AND THE LIBERTARIAN STRATEGY IS NOT FOOL PROOF. SUGGESTING A CIVIL SOCIETY APPRAOCH ALSO FALTERS AS WE ALL KNOW THAT NGOS TOO HAVE COME TO FUNCTION FOR PROFIT. SO WHAT GOVERNANCE MECHANISM SHOULD INDIA LOOK FORWARD TO?
